Sometimes you get homework back from your kids that makes you quickly throw it in the trash and never think on it again. This time, I found this letter in a pile of my papers. Maybe son is catching on to my save/delete tactics.
My husband and I read through the letter and giggled. We were also beaming with pride at our little Statesman. I thought I’d post the letter. We didn’t look at spelling and puntuation, but I don’t look at my own, so, whatever.
If anyone else besides the Teacher doesn’t know what Semper Fi means, it’s short for Semper Fidelis, a latin term meaning Always Faithful. Its the Marine Corps Motto. Why does my son know this? His daddy was a marine. a-uh-rah.
In case its hard to read:
Dear Mr. President,
I wished you would have pulled the troops out of Iraq. Also you should have sent the Marines into Afganastan instead of the Army. The Marines are trained for more than the Army. They could help settle down the dangerous areas while the Army guarded safe areas. You could have also lowered gas prices. You could have done something on global warming too.
PS. Semper Fi!

What does the red ‘3′ and green smiley face signify?
Aside from that, you have one politically aware child there, but I think he should have realised that the president would struggle with some of the vocabulary, never mind Latin.

Hi Glam:
ahaaaa! Yes, our Pres would, wouldn’t he.
As to the 3 and smiley face, who knows.

Awww….smarter than our Pres. at such a tender young age.

Is it true that the teacher didn’t know what Semper Fi was? Wow.

Ah, if only real life could be so simple!
but then again, maybe it CAN be, and its us stupid adults that overcoms so much.
Maybe we should let a kid be president for a while and see what happens.

Hi Meno:
Tis true. Wow is right. As an adult, when a kid says something I’m not sure of, I look it up. Maybe its old, maybe its new, who knows, but i’m usually about to find out.
Hi Rachel:
I think there would be random noise time, instant wrestle time, and lets not forget lego time happening. But I’m sure there would aldo be a heck of a lot more refridgerator art for everyone!

The teacher doesn’t know what Semper Fi is? That’s weird, don’t you think?
What a a great kid! He seems precious, clear and wonderful. This is a letter you should save to show him his childhood clarity of purpose.
Thanks for sharing!

I’m shocked like Meno was. Not having even heard Semper Fi? Not recognizing it as Latin, if not knowing the meaning? Not looking it freaking up?
Great teacher, that one.
I want to vote for your son.

And thank Bill, again, for his years of service, and his sacrifice. I do appreciate it. I know what Semper Fi means. I think you told me.

Hi Claudia:
I think its incredibly weird. And my boy is a great kid, thanks for noticing! and yah, we are totally saving it!
Hi Jocelyn:
Oh, lets not get me going on the school topic. The teacher certainly should have asked what it was, looked it up, something.
Aww, voting for my boy. He would love it, only he’s really shy and hates debating. He’s much better at write a letter and play on the jungle gym.
Hi CEO:
Outside of being sent to the first gulf war, Bill did his four years in Hawaii. Can’t say I’d mind spending a few years there.

I can not believe the teacher didn’t know what Semper Fi meant. Even I do, admittedly courtesy of the wonderful film that is Rushmore, but still… I’m not American, and in context of US troops and all, any American should know that. Gobsmacked!

My first thought on the teacher’s comment is the line about “Better to keep your mouth shut and be *thought* an idiot than to open your mouth and have it confirmed.”
I also wonder how young the teacher is . . . ? (I said some pretty stupid stuff in my 20s, so I try to be gracious — In fact, I probably say a lot of stupid/ignorant stuff now, so there you have it!)
And YAY for your son! His letter is rockin’ awesome! Good job, momma!
